District line trains to provide service between Leeds, York and Harrogate

Harrogate Chamber of Commerce has revealed ambitious plans to introduce an enhanced rail service between Leeds, Harrogate and York, using refurbished District Line stock from London Underground.

The plan would see the route electrified using third rail electrification. The existing diesel services, including the East Coast direct service to London Kings Cross, would continue to operate, with the new electric service providing increased capacity and train frequency.

The ex District Line stock would provide a service every 15 minutes between Leeds and Knaresborough and every 30 minutes between Knaresborough and York.

Third rail electrification is preferred for the route due to the difficulties presented by clearance in the Bramhope tunnel and preserving the visual appearance of the Wharfedale, Crimple Valleys and Knaresbprough viaducts.

If the scheme is approved and the necessary finance can be found, the new trains could be operating on the line as early as 2014.
